What Have I been up to? Quite a lot as it happens…see below for exciting news!

You will have probably noticed that I haven't blogged for a while on this site. There's a reason for this- I deliberately took some time away from my practice to do some business planning and develop some really exciting new programmes and toolkits for specific client groups that, going forward, will be my focus areas ONLY- sorry to those of you looking for hypnotherapy for anything else, but I've focused my area of practice for really good reasons- I only want to use my skills in an area where I have real expertise and passion.

So, what's been going on?
Some of you will know that I have had very many years of working with the sometimes very secretive, debilitating and notoriously hard- to - control field of binge eating and associated body image issues  in women. I suffered for years myself with real self- esteem issues related to food and size, comparing myself unfavourably with others, and it was completely and utterly debilitating affecting my relationships and my work at times. It took years of wasted time, effort and money consulting various professional practitioners who frankly just didn't "get it"- because, to the outside world at least, I looked a normal size and pretty "together"- so what was the problem, really?
Eventually, I found a way- my way- out of the tunnel. Thankfully.
I started to work with other women who were where I had been, as I could very often recognise the signs in others, and started to take the opportunity to be open about a secretive issue so I could support others. Its developed in to a business I'm passionate about and I've decided to focus on getting others out of the same hole- it can be done -when the  commitment is there!
I'll be launching my new site next month and I'm very excited indeed- especially as it doesn't matter where you live, there will be a programme for you.
Watch out for more detail!
On a related note, some people still want to come to me for weight LOSS. That's fine- if binge eating is part of that issue. I'll be using a very specific form of programme though- and more on THAT very soon!
Can't wait to share all of this with you but I'm keeping it all under wraps for a very few more weeks yet.
If you can't wait, and want to see whether we can work together NOW, then please email me at hypno@susanbrampton.co.uk
I do need to point out at this stage that hypnosis is not necessary for all of my clients on my new programmes. I use it as and when required and only when you are up for it- there are lots of other tools and coaching processes that I use too and it all depends on what YOU need and we will decide that together!
Until then…
Have a great weekend!

Exam Season!

It's that time of year when the panic sets in- cram time prior to exams for so many of us- not just GCSEs and A Levels but degrees, post- graduate and professional courses. And the results of these can impact on our lives, from getting that university place through to keeping a job! The pressure is definitely on. And although many of us manage to get through OK, for others, the idea of exams fills us with dread...panic attacks, anxiety, sleeplessness, through to denial and avoidance tactics that only delay the inevitable!

So how can hypnotherapy help?
We work with you in  clear, pragmatic way so you understand how the mind works in relation to the way you behave. A lot of how we act and react is related to a very primitive part of our brain which although is there to help us, to protect us and keep us safe and alive, we have simply adapted some primitive responses to 21st Century living. And when we know and understand that, we are well on our way to doing something positive about it. We of course use Trance to help the processes along but as you'll see when you come along, there's nothing weird or mystical about this- but the effects can be quite magical you know. So if you have any fears or anxieties related to study and exam performance, do come and see me; don't delay!

It's been a busy month...

I haven't blogged for a few weeks which isn't ideal but life has been very busy here at Susan Brampton Hypnotherapy. First of all I have decided to concentrate only on Bath and Salisbury as clinic locations and unfortunately that means that for now at least I can't take on any clients in the Fleet St location.

Other than that, it seems that I have been spending rather a lot of time fielding questions and comments about the new film "Trance". I went in the name of research (and just because I love going to the cinema). My verdict?  It's a fairly interesting bit of entertainment but, given the calibre of the cast and Director it disappointed me to be honest- and although I don't think it did anything catastrophically negative for the hypnotherapy profession, I'm not sure it did it any favours either!
On a completely separate note I have been getting in to training in earnest for my Women V Cancer cycle challenge in October, as it is going to be with us pretty quickly! It's not been easy with the unseasonably poor weather but it's just a case of getting out there and getting on with it!
I'm cycling over 400K across Cuba in October for three charities:

Breast Cancer Care
Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust
Ovarian Cancer Action

and if anyone would like to donate, I have a JustGiving page: www.justgiving.com/sucyclescuba
Thank You!

I'm going to be supporting a small team of willing volunteers who are going to be raising money for me while losing weight- and in return I am offering hypnotherapy FREE to them! Watch this space....

Why Sleep is Vital for Our Well Being

I just wanted to share an interesting article from BBC news with you:

Bad sleep 'dramatically' alters body

By James Gallagher

Health and science reporter, BBC News

A run of poor sleep can have a potentially profound effect on the internal workings of the human body, say UK researchers.

The activity of hundreds of genes was altered when people's sleep was cut to less than six hours a day for a week.

Writing in the journal PNAS, the researchers said the results helped explain how poor sleep damaged health.

Heart disease, diabetes, obesity and poor brain function have all been linked to substandard sleep.

What missing hours in bed actually does to alter health, however, is unknown.

So researchers at the University of Surrey analysed the blood of 26 people after they had had plenty of sleep, up to 10 hours each night for a week, and compared the results with samples after a week of fewer than six hours a night.

More than 700 genes were altered by the shift. Each contains the instructions for building a protein, so those that became more active produced more proteins - changing the chemistry of the body.

Meanwhile the natural body clock was disturbed - some genes naturally wax and wane in activity through the day, but this effect was dulled by sleep deprivation.

Prof Colin Smith, from the University of Surrey, told the BBC: "There was quite a dramatic change in activity in many different kinds of genes."

Areas such as the immune system and how the body responds to damage and stress were affected.

Prof Smith added: "Clearly sleep is critical to rebuilding the body and maintaining a functional state, all kinds of damage appear to occur - hinting at what may lead to ill health.

"If we can't actually replenish and replace new cells, then that's going to lead to degenerative diseases."

He said many people may be even more sleep deprived in their daily lives than those in the study - suggesting these changes may be common.

Dr Akhilesh Reddy, a specialist in the body clock at the University of Cambridge, said the study was "interesting".

He said the key findings were the effects on inflammation and the immune system as it was possible to see a link between those effects and health problems such as diabetes.

The findings also tie into research attempting to do away with sleep, such as by finding a drug that could eliminate the effects of sleep deprivation.

Dr Reddy said: "We don't know what the switch is that causes all these changes, but theoretically if you could switch it on or off, you might be able to get away without sleep.

"But my feeling is that sleep is fundamentally important to regenerating all cells."

As Solution Focused Hypnotherapists we talk to our clients from the first time we meet them about the importance of sleep and in particular, REM sleep, which enables us to process all those emotionally related thoughts and behaviours, and those things that have built up over the course of the day, and move them from the primitive part of the brain to the intellectual part- the pre frontal cortex- where we have control over them. This is a vital process that is fundamentally important to our mental health. When we can't sleep or get sufficient REM to do this, we just can't function properly at any level.

Dealing with sleep issues is part of the process with SF hypnotherapy, regardless of why the client has come to see us, and of course, if the reason IS insomnia, then hypnotherapy can really help.

Time for a Mental Spring Clean?

I’m focusing this month on how hypnotherapy can help people  to  achieve their goals and get more enjoyment out of life as we head in to Springtime.

Winter can send us in to a state of physical and mental “hibernation”, and although many people look ahead to the arrival of Spring with great optimism and pleasure, for many people, for example those suffering with depression, the lighter evenings and longer days can in fact create more feelings of loneliness and low mood, as the days seem longer with less opportunity to “hide away”.

This is a good time of year to take stock and give ourselves the opportunity to have a kind of mental “spring-clean”. What do I mean by this? It’s about coming out from that hibernating, wintery mind set and having a really good clear- out of things that might be holding us back.

Negative self-talk can prevent us from doing things we want to do or from behaving and acting in a positive way. Our minds cannot differentiate between imagination and reality, so if we keep thinking about things we should have done, or tell ourselves we will never be able to do something; well, that negative repetition impacts on us and becomes a habit- a habit to think we can’t rather than think we can.

If the average person thinks about 50 000 thoughts a day, and about 10 per cent of those are negative, that’s 5000 negative thoughts a day! The good news is that we can change these negative thoughts and habits in to more positive ones- we just need to know the tools with which to do so!

Just as we start to sort out our spring and summer clothes, or sort out our clutter at home, we can sort out old thoughts, feelings and issues and re evaluate them- are they useful to us any more? And how can we do this anyway? Susan suggests that hypnotherapy can really help people to move forward in a positive way and put those negative thoughts and feelings away; not just for Spring and Summer, but for good.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a modern, research-based combination of psychotherapy and hypnosis, aimed at encouraging clients to focus on how they want things to be. It’s great for people who have negative or self-critical thoughts or experiences  that inhibit them from getting the very best out of themselves. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a forward- looking approach that is really effective in lowering stress and anxiety levels and also helping with the replacement of  negative habits and behaviours with positive ones .

To be physically healthy, we have to be mentally healthy, and more people recognise these days that medication alone or "just getting on with it" may not be enough and want to make change happen in an ongoing, realistic and sustainable way. Through Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, you learn how you can use your full mental resources to achieve your goals and give you tools that you can use right now, and for the rest of your life.

PRIVATE HEALTH COMPANIES ACCEPTING HYPNOTHERAPY AS A FORM OF TREATMENT!

FINALLY- it looks as though it is going to be a little easier for you to receive hypnotherapy via your private health cover. A change in the rules regarding private health acre has led to hypnotherapy being accepted as a form of treatment by private health care companies. Now, organisations such as Simply Health, Health Shield and specific employer plans with Westfield Health will pay for the therapist's time as long as they are registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC)

This is great news for those of you who would like to access hypnotherapy through your private provider. The National Council of Hypnotherapy (NCH) is delighted to see the change as they have been working towards this goal for a long time now, and they have been pleased to see that the CNHC has been able to assist and actually speed this process up.

So what I would advise is that if you DO have private health cover, find out if they cover hypnotherapy within their programmes. I am an accredited professional  member of the CNHC and NCH and would be very happy to take enquiries from anyone who would like to pay via this route. It's a really good sign that good quality hypnotherapy services are being recognised more and more as it finally moves in to the mainstream!

There are no short cuts- just great results at the right pace for YOU

I have been spending a bit of time recently researching a few things in relation to my practice, and it seems that we now live in a world that wants everything NOW.    NOW NOW NOW!!

So, we want to lose weight NOW, and there are any number of "quick fixes"around, especially at this time of year , with January and those "winter detoxes" in particular (green slime anyone? Mmmmm) which  appeal to that bit of our mind  that doesn't want to hang around for the long term. Boring, tedious.....

What else? Well, just scanning through a couple of newspapers and magazines in front of me, I see here that you can have "instant" pain relief, instant loft conversions, instant "Ta-Dah, all done in a day "conservatories without "unnecessary" foundation-digging, what else....oh yes, instant meals, you know, the ones that are cooked in a thing that goes "ping", instant oats- because who wants to take 5 whole minutes to cook them anyway, no time, no time......semi- permanent makeup- because who has the time to do all of that in the morning?
Phew.
Thing is, we know, deep down, that all this "instant" stuff is about as effective and helpful for us  as putting a Band-Aid on a broken leg. Frankly, it doesn't do a lot to help the actual issue. If you want an extra room and you are going to pay good money to have it, why not do it so that it will last and not leak or fall down ? If you are going to lose weight once and for all, what's the real point of a quick starvation diet which leaves you so hungry it triggers a binge and then- of dear- it's all back on again with more poundage on top in no time!

"Instant" has its place- we are all time poor these days. I get that.

However, sometimes, taking a slightly more "scenic" route to a goal or as an approach to a project can be the best way; taking the time to take things in and appreciate the journey.

No time to do that? Oh, I see....

I find it a little disconcerting that so many adverts, web sites etc. have promises of "instant" results, guarantees that you will do X in Y time.... apart from the dubious ethics behind making such bold statements, thankfully we have the ASA to police these kinds of ads and claims. That's certainly a good thing.

So what's my point?

People often ask me how long it will be before they get better, or how many sessions they will need. I can hazard a guess based upon experience, but the bottom line is that changes can happen quickly when the client has the motivation to make those changes, takes responsibility for their part in their recovery or behaviour changes,  and complies with the programme- and it's interesting for me to see the speed of change in my clients who, for example, use my CD between sessions as requested, and those who do not!

People who want to make changes participate actively. I don't ask for much when people come to see me- they need to bring two things and that's it. They are:

1- Themselves! they need to decide to come and see me, and physically travel to do so.
2. The desire to  make changes that will be helpful for them and to participate in their programme.

That's it!

Solution focused hypnotherapy is fantastic and helps people in so many ways. However, it's not a miracle cure or  a "magic wand"- well, I certainly cannot or will not claim that!  I'll never make any outrageous claims or guarantees, as we are all different and work in different ways and at different speeds for all sorts of reasons. That said, although it may not be magic or "instant", it's pretty amazing how quickly we can see great results. That's magical to me! And what's more, it gives you tools for life as well as for "now", so we don't have the Band-Aid over the broken leg scenario- the broken leg is fixed properly and is workable again, and who knows, you might even be able to walk on it better than ever before!

Warmly
Susan

A little bit about motivation to change

I am just between clients today and though I would just share with you some thoughts about motivation to change and compliance with therapy.

I'm not too keen to take on clients who have been referred or advised to come to me because they "ought" to do something about "X". Why? Because I have found that compliance with therapy is ultimately down to the person's desire to make positive changes in their lives. Hypnotherapy is a fantastic tool and although it's not a magic wand, you may be surprised by the almost magical outcomes in a relatively short space of time...HOWEVER- the motivation to change needs to be there.
I was talking to someone (not a client) about this- she was asking me how I "make" people change and of course, I don't. Through the approaches at my disposal through solution focused work- NLP, CBT, SFBT- and just plain talking to and listening to my clients, they find their way- and trance/ hypnosis s great as it gently and powerfully enables us to access the subconscious mind and, over time, make changes, change habits etc- but the hard work is done by the client of course!
It's interesting for me to see how people "do" when they listen to my CD between sessions compared to those who do not. It's quite marked. A couple of reasons for this in my opinion; firstly, the CD enables a relaxed brain state and supports a good sleep pattern, and it's vital for us to get enough REM sleep every night so we can process the day's anxieties and stresses, and move them in to the intellectual brain where we can make sense of them all, thus reducing overall stress levels. Secondly, the repetitive nature of the CD's messages enables new, more positive mindset/ behaviour. It's so important to give yourself the time to listen to this between session.
Of course, life gets in the way now and then- but overall it really needs to be about prioritising this and giving yourself this "me" time- it's 25 minutes out of the day, and before bed.
So why do people find reasons not to do so? Well, all sorts of reasons; not understanding the importance of it, so I do discuss this every week with my clients so that they do, or maybe (whisper it) perhaps not being ready to make changes- so we talk about motivation to change and look at what may be in it for the client to stay where they are, continue to do what they do- because change can be scary sometimes, can't it?
Of course, there are those who lack the motivation.
There are very few things that people need to bring with them to a hypnotherapy session, other than themselves and the desire to change! Someone who really wants to make changes has that motivation- but it also needs to be coupled with the understanding that the changes come from within, and it does sometimes mean exploration and being brave. Being brave isn't about making big changes. Steve De Shazer, one of the creators of the Solution Focused Brief Therapy, suggested that even the smallest changes can bring the biggest results! It's about exploration and finding what works- and doing more of it.
Simple? Yes.
Easy? Not always. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can really help you to find your motivation and catalysts for change.

Great Feedback on the Power of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy

It's great when clients take the trouble to phone or email with an update on how they are progressing after they have finished seeing me. Today I received a call from an ex-client who had come to me feeling very low and had had years of feelings of low self-worth. She did really well and I am proud of what she had accomplished in the time we spent together, but it was fantastic to hear that she had continued to make changes in her life, and that she was now really taking life by the horns and going for it- so much so that she was contemplating doing a parachute jump to mark her birthday this year and doing something challenging yet exhilarating. I must admit that's one thing I won't be doing in a hurry- I can only admire her nerve- but what a difference she has made in so many ways in a short space of time. That's what I love about Solution Focused work- the results are tangible so quickly, but it isn't a "Quick Fix"- it gives us tools that we can use to sort out whatever we need to right now but  also that we can use for the future.

Come and see what it can do for you.

My New Weight Loss and Management Programme!

OK, we are in to January. How are those resolutions going? Have they left you yet?

We know that by the 14 January (so that would be this Monday coming then!) many of those resolutions have already gone by the wayside. But if they have, don't worry, as you are not alone!

The time to do whatever it is to do what you want is when you have the motivation to do so- not just because it's January, but because the time is RIGHT.

And when you decide that you want to sort out your weight, or get the uncontrollable cravings, difficult relationship with food or just focus on positive eating and health- I can help you.

I have many years of experience with weight and weight issues, and over the last couple of years I have been looking at the various programmes, diets, faddy or mainstream, to see what is it about all of this that has led to more of us being overweight and unhappy, or within a normal range of weight (whatever that is!) but still struggling to control our intake due to that binge and starve cycle which affects more of us than we think...or even if you just need some motivational help- whatever you are struggling with-I can help.

I'm trialling a new approach which I'm excited about, so if you want to know more and would like to participate, email or call me for details- as I'm looking for a cross-section of users who will benefit not only from the programme but also very preferential rates!
Best Wishes
Susan

I am now a qualified Hypnobirthing Practioner

I have recently completed the HypnoBirthing (R) practitioner course at the Hypnobirthing Institute alongside midwives and other qualified hypnotherapists. Unlike some courses, this one is set up so that accredited practitioners develop classes that act as an antenatal programme for those who want to consider the wonderful, relaxing and calm birthing that this can provide.

I believe that my background in nursing and health visiting alongside this course was tremendously helpful; and now I can and do offer antenatal classes for couples in the privacy of their own homes!
If you would like more information on how HypnoBirthing works, then just drop me a line on hypo@susanbrampton.co.uk or call me on 07568 565808. I look forward to hearing from you!
